Greencastle, county seat of Putnam County, is located 40 miles west of Indianapolis and 35 miles east of Terre Haute.  I-70 is eight miles south of the city and U.S. 36 is nine miles north.  Easy access is available to Indianapolis International Airport via US 40 or I-70.

Putnam County Airport, located in Greencastle, has recently expanded its runway length to 5,000 ft and width to 100 ft to handle most corporate aircraft and air freight operations.

Primary Education – Greencastle Community School Corporation

The Greencastle Community School Corporation serves students and families in the City of Greencastle and Greencastle and Madison Townships in central Putnam County.  High school students are eligible to take classes at Area 30 Career Center, Ivy Tech Community College, and DePauw University.    Several high school classes qualify for college credit with Ivy Tech Community College.

Vocational Schools and Community Colleges

Both Area 30 Career Center and Greencastle High School offer vocational courses and adult education.  Ivy Tech Community College has a new campus in Greencastle that offers a wide variety of classes and three associate degree programs.  Other Ivy Tech campuses are located in Indianapolis, Terre Haute and Lafayette.  Ivy Tech opened its new Greencastle campus in the Fall of 2009 and now has 800 students.   Other students pursue career training at Vincennes University located 90 miles southwest of Greencastle.

Medical Facilities

Hospital – Putnam County Hospital – Greencastle

Putnam County Hospital is a critical access hospital with 25 in-patient beds, full service emergency room, outpatient facilities, and 50 visiting medical specialists. The hospital has recently completed upgrades to its surgery, radiology, and women’s health care center.

Other Medical Facilities

Putnam County hosts four nursing homes; a clinic, and a dialysis center. Putnam County Operation Life offers emergency ambulance and life support services. Three air ambulance services also provide service in the county.


Many subdivisions serve Greencastle and the immediate area offering both new and existing homes and building lots in all price ranges.  Many apartment buildings, complexes and condos are available in a wide price range.  A new 94 unit complex is now open as construction continues on the last two buildings.  The community also has apartment complexes and assisted living facilities available for the elderly.

Greencastle offers three historic residential neighborhoods that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  Old House Journal recently named Greencastle as a community offering some of the best values for purchasing a historic home.

Local property taxes are assessed on a base of 100% of True Tax Value or approximately market value. County Adjusted Gross Income Tax and County Economic Development Income Tax equals 1.5% of personal income with the funds used for local property tax relief and other projects.

State sales tax of 7% on all retail sales – food products and certain other items and wholesale sales are exempt.  Purchase of utilities in support of manufacturing may be exempt from sales tax if certain criteria are met.

The state income tax for individuals is 3.4% which will drop to 3.23% by 2017.  The state adjusted gross income tax for corporations is 8.5% with a scheduled decrease in steps to 6.5% by June 30, 2015; additional decreases in steps will drop the rate to 4.9% by July 1, 2021.   For more information on Business Taxes – CLICK!


Greencastle has three city parks including a public swimming pool, tennis courts, fishing, playgrounds, and picnic areas.  Big Walnut Sports Park, east of Greencastle, offers 80 acres of team sport facilities.  Windy Hill Country Club, located north of town, offers a 9 hole private golf course and swimming pool.  Two 18 hole public golf courses are located in the county.  Seven state parks are within a one-hour drive. Two recreational lakes are available within 30 miles including Lieber State Recreation Area located in southern Putnam County. The county is also home to the new 2,000 acre Deer Creek Fish and Wildlife Area located along the National Road, US 40.

People Pathways continues to develop a system of run, walk, skate, and bike trails around the community. Over 8.8 miles of paved trails are complete.  A 3.1 mile trail connects Fillmore to Greencastle.  The trail is being extended east to Hendricks County.  Additional “share the road” trails are designated throughout the community.

DePauw University offers NCAA Division III men’s and women’s sports and a wide variety of cultural activities from art to theater.  The university also recently opened a 480 acre nature preserve. The Putnam County Library is located in a recently expanded facility in Greencastle.  The Putnam County Playhouse is well-known for its Summer Stock theater schedule.  Visitors can also enjoy the Putnam County Museum.

Less than one hour away, Indianapolis hosts a wide range of amenities including the arts, concerts, museums, professional sports, and theater.
